From Sean Jones: Teofimo Lopez signed a revised contract with Top Rank that increases his minimum budget and puts him in a feature position on ESPN + and pay-per-view, according to Mike Coppinger. Lightweight champ Teofimo and Top Rank are looking for a big name to fight against on October 2nd.
As long as Teofimo fights against PPV-worthy opponents, it shouldn’t be a problem to sell your fights. He does that with his fight against. clearly not George Kambosos Jr this month on June 19th at Triller Pay-per-View.
This is not a marquee fight as the casual boxers have never seen Kambosos Jr. fight in the US rear end, even hardcore fans have no idea who Kambosos Jr is. Those who know him weren’t impressed by the way he was about to lose to old hands Lee Selby and Mickey Bey.
Because of this, it’s a crazy idea for Triller to have paid a ton of money with his winning bid on the recent wallet. It’s unclear how much the Trill Tops know about boxing because they are taking a huge risk placing Teofimo’s low-level fight against Kambosos on PPV.
This fighting event is likely to produce poor PPV numbers, which shows that Teofimo cannot sell fights against no-name opposition.
Teofimo has been talking about his next fight against WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney, but Bob Arum broke that bubble this week by saying the fight won’t happen in October.
Arum said he had already spoken to Teofimo’s manager David McWaters about his options, which DO NOT include a dispute with Haney.
Bob Arum from Top Rank has already put the idea of a Teofimo facade into circulation Vasily Lomachenko on ESPN PPV for October 2nd but it would have to be agreed by Teo.
That is unlikely to happen. Arum desperately wants the rematch between Lomachenko and Teofimo, but he can’t bring Teo to the ground and force him to sign.
The likelihood of this fight occurring is slim due to the disinterest in Teofimo and the role played by his father, Teofimo Sr. They don’t like the Lomachenko rematch, and it’s understandable why. It’s a risky fight for Teofimo, who has only had a handful of tough games in his career.
The other way to fight for Teofimo is Jose Pedraza. Arum said if Teofimo wants to fight Josh Taylor At 140 he would have to fight the winner of the fight Jose Pedraza against Julian Rodriguez. Pedraza stopped Rodriguez tonight.
Josh Taylor will next defend against his WBO duty Jack Catterall so Teofimo won’t be able to fight him on October 2nd.
Sources: Teofimo Lopez and Top Rank have signed an amended contract that increases his minimum budget and shows him on ESPN + PPV. Lopez defends £ 135 title against George Kambosos on Trill June 19 after a financial dispute with TR. Teofimo is looking for a well-known opponent in October, “said @MikeCoppinger
Not a new deal, but a modified one. Lopez signed a five-year deal with Top Rank before making his professional debut in November 2016. Includes a two-year option, so will run until almost the end of 2023. The relationship between Teofimo and TR has apparently mended as he returned to the ESPN platform on October 2nd. “
We need to see whether or not the relationship between Teofimo and Top Rank is fixed. But with this new amended deal, Teofimo will prevail when his bouts are placed on PPV.
It could be bad for him if they successively bombed PPV on ESPN for choosing lesser-known fighters like Kambosos Jr. instead of facing Lomachenko in a rematch.
