In March, chaos broke out at an amateur MMA event in Lake Worth Beach, Florida. The event, hosted by RIZE Fighting Championships, went off the rails when there was fighting in the small crowd. These fights soon turned into a mass brawl that involved dozens of people. Then someone drew a gun and fired a shot in the air. This led to a rush as the panicked guests either hid or swarmed to the nearest exit.
According to NBC Miami Antonio Montes De Oca Hernandez, 56, was arrested on suspicion of firing the gun that night. He was arrested on Saturday and held in a prison in the Miami-Dade district. It is unclear what charges he will face.
The video of the incident was widely shared on social media with multiple angles capturing the moment a man fired in the air. One of these videos was recorded by UFC veteran Hector Lombard. He posted the clip on Instagram.
“This guy just shot his pistol in the middle of hand-to-hand combat on an amateur show,” Lombard wrote when he signed the video. “Shameful and pathetic cowardly behavior ruined a great night of fighting.”
Armando Gonzalez, who sponsored the event, spoke with NBC Miami about the incident. “Who knows what he was thinking,” he said. “When it came to defusing the situation, but you can’t do that in the United States, especially at an event full of fans, with people, you can’t shoot guns in the air.”
