From William Lloyd: Eddie Hearn wants fans to forget Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury fight for now, because the focus of AJ and Matchroom is now on Oleksandr Usyk.
WBC heavyweight champion Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) also has a potential banana peel in the shape of the former WBC champion Deontay Wilderhe faces on July 24th.
There is no guaranteed certainty that Fury will win this fight against Deontay (42-1-1, 41 KOs) who has and is a new coach for revenge.
If Wilder upsets Fury, it could be Joshua Wilder playing in Saudi Arabia in December. That will be the next step if Joshua wins his fight against Usyk.
Hearn believes IBF / WBA / WBO heavyweight champion Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs) has an uphill battle against WBO compulsory Usyk (18-0, 13 KOs).
As you’d expect, Hearn doesn’t want Joshua to overlook him when he thinks about Fury and ends up losing. That happened before when Joshua stopped by Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019, and he suffered a disgruntled knockout loss in the sixth round.
Hearn is negotiating with the trainer of the Ukrainian fighter Alex Krassyuk about the fight between Joshua and Usyk in September. You have agreed on the terms of the fight for the offer and the next step is to sign the contracts.
Hearn says “forget” Joshua-Fury
“You know what, I’m thinking right now Let’s just forget about this fight“Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports about the Fury match.
“The only good thing that comes out of it is that We have two good heavyweight fights [Joshua vs. Usyk and Fury vs. Wilder]. These are no time fights for Fury and AJ. These are two competitive, dangerous fights.
“This summer you have Fury-Wilder and hopefully AJ-Usyk as well. Two good heavyweight fights, ”said Hearn.
Former undisputed cruiserweight champion, Usyk, has on a lot of muscle weight when bulking down to the low 230s hoping to increase his clout for the Joshua fight.
Assuming the Joshua-Usyk fight is made for September, there won’t be much weight difference between the two.
Joshua weighed 240 pounds for his last fight with Kubrat Pulev last December and 237 pounds for his rematch with Andy Ruiz in 2019.
If Usyk comes into battle with Joshua at around 231 pounds, there will be very little to separate them by weight.
“As soon as these two nights are over, let’s go back to where we started before because right now, there are no conversations from the other side to us saying, ‘Let’s just put it in the diary for December or January,’ ”said Hearn of wanting to keep the conversations for the mega-fight Joshua vs.
“I don’t really want to get into this conversation. I want AJ to focus on Oleksandr Usyk“Said Hearn.
Joshua has to focus on the task at hand against Usyk as this may be a tougher fight than Fury’s rematch with Wilder. Usyk has the technical skills and pedigree to defeat Joshua.
We saw what Usyk did when he dominated the much bigger Joe Joyce in the World Series of Boxing many years ago, and that was a bigger fighter than Joshua.
